[edit]
A clinical terminology is a structured list of terms for use in clinical practice. These terms describe the care and treatment of patients, and cover areas like diseases, operations, treatments, drugs and healthcare administration.
[edit]
By using clinical terminology it is possible to record information in a consistent manner. Clinical and administrative data can be communicated more efficiently between healthcare workers to cover prescribing, referrals, hospital discharges, etc. Research organizations are able to benefit from encoded data by being able to report on health trends based on the common terminology, confident that data from different organizations is being interpretted the same way.
[edit]
Examples of clinical terms include Unified Medical Language System, SNOMED, ICD9, ICD10, CPT4, LOINC, etc.
